Just the Numbers - Face of the Box Office

September 26, 2007

Though our Just the Numbers column usually requires no prologue, and having one in fact, defeats the purpose, we felt this particular topic needed an introductory note. As sensitive as this topic is, it is important to illustrate representation in the media in its barest form. As a society we easily call ourselves tolerant and diverse. We're all more than happy to say we don't see colour in our advanced day and age. But is that truly reflected in the images we see on a daily basis? This latest installment of Just the Numbers showcases ethnic representation as it is in today's media by looking at the starring casts of particular films.

Based off the five current highest grossing films at the US box office*, the following demonstrates whether we truly see colour or not.

1. Transformers
$313, 780, 217

2. Pirates of the Caribbean:
At World's End

$309, 302, 628

3. Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix
$289, 899, 666

4. The Bourne Ultimatum
$220, 631, 115

5. Ratatouille
$203, 040, 254

* The international box office is comprised of all US films - the core money making machine in the film industry, thus it felt unnecessary to use those particular statistics.
** North American Gross, US Dollars
