Melanie Chung's Award Winning documentary Breaking Down the BBoys has played at the Wreck Beach International Film Festival 2005 and the Student Shorts Film Festival 2005, and now JXM brings you the lowdown on the film. Check it out below!
The misconceptions of BBoys are often negative and even condescending. Often they are thought as thugs, gangsters or misguided youth. Many believe that they are from the streets, and grew up living a hard life with a difficult background and on the track of becoming a degenerate of society. In Breaking Down the BBoys we get a glimpse at the lives of real BBoys and their thoughts on the prejudices they face as a BBoy. Mark Nancoo, like many university students, struggles juggling his studies to become a police officer, work, family, friends and of course breaking. Lawrence Duong similarly faces the same struggles as Mark and reveals the two different lives he leads - an information technology student at Ryerson, and one as a BBoy. Nylda Gallardo-Lopez is no doubt a woman in a man's world. The BGirl reveals her thoughts on being a female in a male dominated field and being a single mother.
Melanie likes making movies. Oh it's true. It's damn true.
