The 68th Golden Globes - JXM Picks the Winners
Best Motion Picture - Drama
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The King's Speech
The Social Network
JXM Picks: Black Swan
Black Swan takes our vote as it has that near impossible blend of film artistry, mainstream appeal and the ability to set off new trends in everything arts. Designers are inspired by the ballet look - black, whites, beiges and blushing pinks are all the rage along with leotards and tutus. Makeup artists are pushing the theatrical and even dinner parties are snatching up inspiration. It is the movie to permeate all castes of culture. It can be accused of artful pretention, but its one of those movies that just about everyone is taken with.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama
Halle Berry - Frankie and Alice
Nicole Kidman - Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence - Winter's Bone
Natalie Portman - Black Swan
Michelle Williams - Blue Valentine
JXM Picks: Natalie Portman
See above. But we wish it were Jennifer Lawrence. And a third of us is expecting Michelle Williams to be the upset.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
Jesse Eisenberg - The Social Network
Colin Firth - The King's Speech
James Franco - 127 Hours
Ryan Gosling - Blue Valentine
Mark Wahlberg - The Fighter
JXM Picks: Colin Firth
Its the year of the youngins but we got to give it to Colin Firth. Its kinda like Robert Downey Jr.'s Kirk Lazarus' (of Tropic Thunder fame) theory on winning an Academy Award...
Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Alice in Wonderland
Burlesque
The Kids Are All Right
Red
The Tourist
JXM Picks: The Kids Are All Right
Is it just us, or do the rest of the nominees feel like they were thrown in just to fill up the slots?
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Annette Bening - The Kids Are All Right
Anne Hathaway - Love and Other Drugs
Angelina Jolie - The Tourist
Julianne Moore - The Kids Are All Right
Emma Stone - Easy A
JXM Picks: Emma Stone
Ok, ok, maybe this is just wishful thinking. If not the lovable redhead we go for Annette Bening. Her bittersweet performance kicks ass.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Johnny Depp - Alice in Wonderland
Johnny Depp - The Tourist
Paul Giamatti - Barney's Version
Jake Gyllenhaal - Love and Other Drugs
Kevin Spacey - Casino Jack
JXM Picks: Johnny Depp
We say for Alice in Wonderland, but really, his odds are better than the rest of the nominees.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Amy Adams - The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter - The King's Speech
Mila Kunis - Black Swan
Melissa Leo - The Fighter
Jacki Weaver - Animal Kingdom
JXM Picks: Amy Adams
Adams is the award show darling so we're leaning towards her odds of frequency. Though this is Kunis' breakthrough role, carving herself a third dimenson in her skill bank, but maybe this isn't the role for the award. We're sure she'll be doing something in the very near future that cements her into the award show world.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Christian Bale - The Fighter
Michael Douglas - Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Andrew Garfield - The Social Network
Jeremy Renner - The Town
Geoffrey Rush - The King's Speech
JXM Picks: Andrew Garfield
Garfield is the next "it" boy on Hollywoods It List and we think this is where The Social Network will be awarded. But crap, this is a tough category. Bale, as usual melts into his character but he may be punished like Mickey Rourke for bad behaviour.
Best Animated Feature Film
Despicable Me
How To Train Your Dragon
The Illusionist
Tangled
Toy Story 3
JXM Picks: Toy Story 3
Though How To Train Your Dragon is more than a contender (it could very well steal this one), Toy Story 3 has the nostalgia, brand weight, and the chops for a threequel to take it.
Best Director Motion Picture
Darren Aronofsky - Black Swan
David Fincher - The Social Network
Tom Hooper - The King's Speech
Christopher Nolan - Inception
David O. Russell - The Fighter
JXM Picks: Darren Aronofsky
Dammit when will Nolan take something home? We also think the Globes are holding out till the American remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo to award Fincher.
Best Screenplay – Motion Picture
Simon Beaufoy, Danny Boyle - 127 Hours
Christopher Nolan - Inception
Stuart Blumberg, Lisa Cholodenko - The Kids Are All Right
David Seidler - The King's Speech
Aaron Sorkin - The Social Network
JXM Picks: David Seidler
Beaufoy and Boyle have had their share of the pie. We want Nolan to have it (let's see you try writing a story that's five levels deep and it still make sense! Hell, even trying to draw a flowchart that makes sense can cause a brain hemmorage). And Sorkin is Sorkin. It wouldn't surprise us if he walks home with the Globe.
Best Television Series – Drama
Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
The Good Wife
Mad Men
The Walking Dead
JXM Picks: Boardwalk Empire
Yeah we said it. Mad Men taking it for a fourth year in a row (though this past season hands down outdid the other three) may be stretching its luck. And if any show were to steal it from Mad Men we'd want it to be their AMC brother The Walking Dead. But alas, we think the shift in awards tropheys may be going back to HBO with their prohibition set, mafia laden, Atlantic City drama starring the one and only Steve Buscemi and helmed by heavyweights Martin Scorsese and Mark Wahlberg.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama
Julianna Margulies - The Good Wife
Elisabeth Moss - Mad Men
Piper Perabo - Covert Affairs
Katey Sagal - Sons of Anarchy
Kyra Sedgwick – The Closer
JXM Picks: Elisabeth Moss
Margulies can take this one but this may be how the Globes make up for the above loss.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama
Steve Buscemi - Boardwalk Empire
Bryan Cranston - Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall - Dexter
Jon Hamm - Mad Men
Hugh Laurie - House
JXM Picks: Steve Buscemi
Like with the Motion Picture category we're tied up with this one. We think Boardwalk is the breakthrough show of the year but Hamm, like Moss, may help in making up for the series' loss in the Series category. Hall on the other hand survived cancer and Dexter has frequently been overlooked. Lastly, no matter how many new shows came and went, no matter what the breakthrough show of the year was, we are dying for Breaking Bad to return and the 30 second speech can fill our craving.
Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy
30 Rock
The Big bang Theory
The Big C
Glee
Modern Family
Nurse Jackie
JXM Picks: Glee
Its called the snowball effect. If hit songs weren't part of its formula, is it really any good? Though masked by its claim to diversity, the show is actually pretty racially insensitive and steeped in racial and sexuality stereotypes. Asian Camp? The only black female is ghetto fabulous? Gay is equated to flamboyancy and musical showtunes (see Kurt and Rachel's two fathers)? Fillipino Sunshine Corazon is a walking Hello Kitty cartoon character? Tina Cohen-Chang and Mike Chang are both social delinquents? Maybe that's why there's been a barrage against the Asian community and their "social dysfunction" lately (see McLeans' 'Too Asian?' and The Wall Street Journal's 'Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior'). Clearly we don't think its deserving. Nonetheless we think it'll win.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Toni Collette - United States of Tara
Edie Falco - Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey – 30 Rock
Laura Linney - The Big C
Lea Michele - Glee
JXM Picks: Lea Michele
The snowball gets bigger. We want Tina Fey back.
Best Performance by and Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Alec Baldwin - 30 Rock
Steve Carell - The Office
Thomas Jane - Hung
Matthew Morrison - Glee
Jim Parsons - The Big Bang Theory
JXM Picks: Jim Parsons
Ok we don't think he's going to get it. But we really really want him to. Might I add...
