@ NXNE: The Black Lips

By Melanie Chung

On a balmy Thursday evening, The Black Lips draws an enormous crowd at Yonge and Dundas Square. Filled with hipsters straight out of an American Apparel ad or a Nylon Magazine fashion spread, the crowd bobs their head in unison to the beat while the scent of weed lingers in the air.

Known for their outrageous performances inclusive of nudity and all out PDA’s, The Black Lips toned down their usual stage accompaniment to a just a couple chicks dancing and intermittently making out. Hurrah we’ve finally crossed the bridge where homosexual kissing is just as appropriate as heterosexual kissing in a free public event. That kind of censorship be damned.

With their retro classic 70’s rock and roll vibe with a hint of western, The Black Lips entertained with tracks like Starting Over and O Katrina. They managed to draw out the Queen West-ers out of their ‘hood and into the oversaturated commercially wrought Yonge & Dundas tourist hot spot and turned the normally curious audience into a full out mosh pit. The North by Northeast festival hit another homerun with this one.
