Duo Fundament from Montreal kicks off the show at the packed Opera House for North by Northeast’s hip hop lineup. The fifteen minute acts started with Fundament’s bouncy and up tempo tracks like Rock the Spot a crowd favourite.
They ended their set with the more decidedly somber Killin’ Me, filled with rolling rhymes, showcasing their mic skills. Though they’re still somewhat undeveloped and still searching for their own distinct style, Fundament definitely has potential for that mainstream appeal.
Originally from Liberia, King Jus, short for justice and also known as Megatron, is “a man on a mission” who gets the crowd pumping declaring “if you ain’t down with hip hop, get the fuck out of here!” His lyrics are thick with bravado and Vicious filled with vulgarities.
His style is reminiscent of the mid 90’s hip hop scene where raps were street tough and laced with aggression. King Jus’ music is deemed appropriate for those “who like real hip hop.” Jus can definitely work a crowd with his cool beats and in your face style.
